Review : Fairy Folk : Combination of reality and fantasy of unbeknown desires!

Movies having aliens and unknown species are usually liked by the audiences. But ‘#FairyFolk’ features a gender less creature which looks like human but is devoid of nipples or genitalia. The movie uses this fantasy character to dive deep into married life of a middle class couple. After a few years quite a few urban marriages face stagnation and the couples feel marital angst. Fairy Folk takes viewers through relationship drama of a married couple which is a combination of reality and fantasy of unbeknown desires.

Mohit (Mukul Chadda) and Ritika (Rasika Dugal), while travelling at night through a forest area of Aarey in Mumbai face a car breakdown. Trying to figure out the problem they spot a stranger staring at them in the dark night. They flee from there but the stranger reaches their house. This stranger is a genderless creature who just stands still. Mohit finds a way to make him move and starts liking the process. In an inebriated state he feels emotional and pecks on his lips and havoc happens. The creature takes a human shape and gets a name Kabir (Chandrachoor Rai). Kabir is fantasia version of Mohit who Ritika likes. Mohit gets another specie and tries to make it into a fantasia version of Ritika. But what he gets is a woman in a bearded man’s body. What transpires between in all four of them forms the crux of the narration.

The story is out of the box and may sound weird. But the director (Karan Gour) keeps the situations natural and the proceeding light hearted. He tries to delve into the relationship ambit and the loneliness despite being together. The actors have improvised dialogues and they sound natural though sometimes repetitive. It helps scenes look authentic and real. But the pace of the movie is wavering making it dull at times. Mukul Chadda’s easy going approach is remarkable and he has shown range of emotions which look real. Rasika Dugal too has done a brilliant job and her spontaneous reactions adds depth to her heartfelt performance. Others have lent good support.

Fairy Folk is a nice experiment and viewers who are on the lookout for an out of the box movie will definitely enjoy it.
