Review : Mr & Mrs Mahi : Emotional sports drama!

In #Indiacricket is religion and crores of boys, and now girls too, aspire to make it to the top league of the game. Representing nation in any sports is a matter of pride, especially cricket as it is financially lucrative. Academically inclined go to engineering and medical studies. Some of these professionals, sometimes, make a career in a totally different field e.g. performing arts, sports etc. Mr & Mrs Mahi narrates a story of a #professionalmedico turning into a #professionalcricketer.

Mahendra Agarwal (Rajkumar Rao) aka Mahi is extremely passionate about playing cricket. His father (Kumud Mishra) forces him to join family sports shop after he fails to get selected in a state cricket team. On the other hand Mahima (Janhvi Kapoor) aka Mahi is a medico who likes truthfulness of Mahendra and both have an arranged marriage. Later he finds out that his wife is a die hard fan of cricket and plays the game well too. He decides to make his wife a professional cricketer by coaching her thus realising his own dream of being successful. Both the Mahis tread the path which is not devoid of pain, humiliation and emotional upheaval in their married life. How Mr & Mrs Mahi get over all this forms the crux of the story.

In sports dramas, an underdog making big is a common formula used by the film makers and Mr & Mrs Mahi is no exception. The movie is like Abhiman part 2 or A Star Is Born or The Politician’s Husband. The director Sharan Sharma (Gunjan Saxena; The Kargil Girl) has infused a lot of emotional drama in this sports drama. The messge of following one’s dream without self doubt is well delivered. The film has varying pace which may disturb viewers’ attention. The production values are high and the film has excellent technical values. Cinematography is pleasant and the music adds to the drama on screen. Rajkumar Rao once again scores high points while playing multi layered character. He evokes sympathy for his character and makes his portrayal more humane. Janhvi Kapoor excels as a simpleton medico to a professional cricketer. She too has done well in emotional scenes and on field batting scenes too. Her efforts come across beautifully as her batting looks authentic which is laudable. Kumud Mishra is praiseworthy as usual and Zarina Wahab and Rajesh Sharma lend good support to the acting team.
