Review: Vijay 69 – Dreams Have No Expiry Date!
Many retirees, especially from the middle class, find themselves navigating a life devoid of purpose after a lifetime of putting their dreams on hold for family. “Vijay 69” is a film that underscores a powerful message: age should never stand in the way of pursuing one’s dreams.
The story follows #VijayMathew (#AnupamKher), a 69-year-old retired man who grapples with loneliness after the loss of his wife. Once a swimmer in his youth, he now works as a swimming coach at a local pool. Reflecting on his life, Vijay realizes he has few personal achievements to celebrate. Determined to change that, he sets his sights on competing in a triathlon—a grueling competition involving swimming, cycling, and running. Despite numerous challenges due to his age, Vijay’s unshakeable determination drives him forward. His journey toward fulfilling this dream forms the heart of the narrative.
While the story is undoubtedly inspiring, it does stumble in parts. The screenplay is well-crafted but does fall into occasional clichés. Although laced with a fair amount of profanity, given that it’s a digital release, the film remains largely wholesome. The core message is touching, and the use of the classic song “Aage Bhi Jaane Na Tu” intensifies the emotional resonance of certain scenes. The humor, however, feels somewhat forced, and there are moments where the melodrama is overplayed.
Anupam Kher delivers an outstanding performance, carrying the film effortlessly with a portrayal that’s both convincing and heartfelt. He’s ably supported by a strong ensemble cast, including Chunkey Panday, Vrajesh Hirji, Guddi Maruti, and Mihir Ahuja, each contributing effectively to the story.
“Vijay 69” is an inspiring tribute to senior citizens and a reminder that dreams have no expiry date.
