Dr Himanshu Mehta philosophises, ‘Most often, we are strangers in the mirror’

Mumbai-based eye surgeon Dr Himanshu Mehta is not only a renowned member of the medical fraternity but is also someone who is responsible for bringing us the life stories and motivating journeys of many famous personalities from different fields. The doctor has his own live chat show called Mirror, Wisdom, Reflective where he interacts with experts from different fields, talking about their achievements and life experiences. “Most people find that they are strangers in the mirror. Either you think you are not good looking or you have an inflated ego. But most often, we are strangers in the mirror. Most people don’t value their own selves and always compare themselves with others. Here, I am acting as a mirror to reflect the wisdom from my guests,” says Dr Himanshu.

Talking about how he thought about starting his own chat show, he says, “I used to be the master of ceremony for quite a few programmes of the medical fraternity. Being a doctor, I meet a lot of personalities and fortunately a lot of big personalities from various aspects of life. They all teach me a lot. They all have so much that they have achieved, learnt and done. So I said why not have the best of these personalities coming out and talking about what they have done. Before this, I also did a few chat shows in private with other doctors, where I would initiate question and answer sessions and the audience loved this because they could get their questions answered. That’s where a lot of queries got resolved.”

He adds, “So, the purpose of my current talk show is that people from various intellectual fields, it could be medicine, physiotherapy or anything else, get to share their personal life experiences. Someone who had undergone a bad trauma, how he bounced back in life…a chef, a good industrialist, someone from a singer, to a member of the film industry. I have been fortunate to meet a lot of successful people in my life. It is always an enigma for a newcomer to see the steps to success. There are some basic ingredients that are required to make it big, besides luck. They have worked hard and lost a lot of things to get something. I have been always impressed by learning from smart people. From childhood, I always had friends smarter than me. I wanted to learn more.”

Dr Himanshu has had the likes of Sonu Nigam, physiotherapist for the Indian Cricket Team Ali Irani, former chairman of SEBI UK Sinha, chef Sanjeev Kapoor as well as spiritual teacher in the Brahma Kumaris spiritual movement in India BK Shivani as guests on his show. Talking about the response that he has got for his chat show, he says, “The response has been great. It’s a lot of learning. After that 60 mins, people find themselves more enlightened and feel like they have learnt so much.”
