If you’re confused about where to begin, here’s a list of Marathi chart toppers that you need to add to your watchlist.

Bhatukali – The real winner that provides the masterstroke in the film is the story. This is one of the few Marathi movies that chooses a simple story line to bring across behavioural psychology, in a way that has never been done before. You can choose your friends but not your family. You are born with it and over the years, you get used to ‘behaving’ like a family member. But how much of this behaviour remains honest and how much of it becomes forced? How long can this show go on? Bhatukali, a heart-warming tale of love, loss and bittersweet relationships, is the story of Shrikant Deshmukh and his family members.

Natsamrat – This extremely realistic film backed by phenomenal writing and gripping performances is indeed a must watch. The interspersed dramatization is what makes the film a winner. Starring Nana Patekar, MedhaManjrekar and Vikram Gokhale in the lead roles, the film is based on a veteran Shakespearean actor who steps off the stage and into the painful tragedy of old age, facing ungrateful family and his fleeting legacy.

Duniyadari – Set against the backdrop of late 70’s, this Sanjay Jadhav directorial is all about the journey of the heart. The film is based on a novel of the same name by the author Suhas Shirvalkar and is the only Indian film of the decade (2010-2020) which has completed 40 weeks in Cinemas. It revolves around a few college friends who help their friends, who were in love, get married. But as their journey unfolds, they soon find out that the boy is suffering from a terminal illness. Years later, they meet at their usual hang-out and remember the good times and their friendship.

Hirkani- This film is a true piece of art and will undoubtedly leave you awestruck. It is based on the real-life story of a mother’s valiant effort to reach her hungry child in time and captures every little emotion beautifully. It depicts the story of Hira, a milk maid who lives at the foothills of Raigad fort and who wouldfrequently visit the fort to sell milk. The gates of the fort once closed in the evening would open only in the morning as per orders from Shivaji Maharaj. One day Hira reaches late and by then the gates were closed but she dares to climb down a cliff in the dead of the night to get back to her infant son.
