‘Dhadkan Zindaggi Kii’ portrays the gender-discrimination a woman goes through!

A promising and relatable show, on a strong-willed woman’s fight against patriarchy, is #NilanjanaPurkayasstha and #HerumbKhot’s “#DhadkanZindaggiKii” which went on-air Monday (December 6). The show focuses on the gender biases a woman face not just in her professional life, but even at her home. With the backdrop of the medical world, it revolves around Dr. Deepika Sinha, a senior surgeon, and her colleagues and how her traumatic past keeps haunting her present.

Dr. Sinha had to put everything on the line, at the personal front, to become a surgeon, but her struggles did not just end there. It continued even when she became a surgeon, not to forget a good one, and her skills, passion and intuitions were given the name of “ego”. She was fired from her previous job because she followed her gut, but unfortunately the patient lost their life and the blame was put on her. And after job-hunting for six months when she finally found a job, the junior doctors under her questioned her merit and even concluded that she got the appointment because she took favour from her boss.

The show in the most beautiful way portrays the gender-discrimination a woman goes through. Something as up-to-date as the medical field also has this going on within the system because no one can see a woman succeeding. But is it just in the medical field? It’s everywhere. A woman’s dream and passion are first sidelined at her home. She is nurtured to only take care of a family within the four walls of the home, anything outside that is off-limits for her. And even if she is encouraged, the male-dominated world doesn’t let her soak in the success so easily. If she succeeds, their egos get hurt and they tell her that it’s because she took the wrong, unethical path to get there, and god forbid if she fails, they call her incapable and what not.

Every home has a Deepika, and if not every home, every workplace has a Deepika, and “Dhadkan Zindaggi Kii” in a wonderful way shows what these girls go through on a daily basis. At the same time, it also shows that no matter what the challenges or struggles are, these women never let it get to them. It might affect them for sometime, but then they shrug off those feelings and continue to work on their dreams.

Dr. Deepika Sinha might has had a tainted past and her struggles in the present to make her mark in the new hospital is no less. The first two episodes have left the audience fascinated by her past and intrigued by what her future is going to be in the FMS hospital.

While Dr. Deepika is the central character of the show, the other characters are crucial too. They have a backstory which affects their present. For example, Dr. Abhay Sathe comes across as a very passionate and capable doctor, but he has his share of insecurities too, especially when he sees a woman becoming more successful than him. He has a problem with Deepika’s actions and decisions and has even raised a question on her character. It will be interesting to see his journey from an insecure junior doctor to having the utmost respect for his boss.

At the same time, there is Dr. Sia who is happy to have a female boss on-board but is worried with her boyfriend, Dr. Abhay, raising questions on a woman’s success. Dr. Piroz and Dr. Ansari are two other interesting characters in the show. They are at a constant tussle with each other, but at heart they are just two good doctors. Dr. Pranab is the most-sorted guy who is an excellent doctor, an encouraging mentor and a good human, who doesn’t judge people based on their past or their gender, but purely based on their talent and capabilities.

The show looks very promising. The backdrop of the medical field has always generated the audience’s interests and the ensemble cast and their performance is another USP of the beautiful story that the makers have created. The direction gives you the feel of a real hospital much like what one can see in international shows. The dialogues are hard-hitting and make you put on your thinking caps. The show is as realistic as it can be and it’s definitely a must-watch.
