Producer Prateek Sharma says Johnny Depp’s win will encourage men to speak up against domestic violence!
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s bitter six-week-long trial that has been making headlines has finally come to an end. Depp has won the defamation case and will be paid $15 million by his ex-wife. Producer Prateek Sharma, much like many others across the globe, has closely followed the case. He talks about Depp’s win and how this might help men suffering domestic violence in the fear of being judged.
“Johnny Depp has quoted right after his victory – “A new chapter has finally begun”, and I can’t agree more, says Prateek, who has made popular shows such as Beyhadh, Ek Deewana Tha, Manmohini, Sufiyana Pyaar Mera, Bahu Begum, Teri Meri Ek Jindri and Beyhadh 2.
He continues, “I think this case is going to be an important milestone in the way we look at domestic violence. Unfortunately, majority of Indian men suffers from pseudo-masculinity and the idea of domestic violence with a man is almost like raising questions on thier manliness. Amidst Depp-Heard Trial another video was doing rounds where the principal of a reputed school from Jaipur was brutally beaten up by his wife. So, its evident that domestic violence with a man is very much a reality. And abuse in no form and no gender should be acceptable. More and more people should talk about it”.
Prateek feels when a celeb decides to keep everything transparent and show the guts to come out in the open to share what they are going through it does help the society. That is exactly what Depp did.
“When a superstar or a celebrity or someone in public eye, stands up against something so serious, it inspires others to come out and speak up. Exactly like the #Metoo movement. Now I think men will be more courageous to speak up against domestic violence.” he ends.
