“No Small Parts” traces Vijay Varma’s rise to fame in the world of cinema
For over a decade, versatile actor Vijay Varma has stunned audiences with his extraordinary performances across Indian cinema. The latest episode of IMDb Originals ‘No Small Parts’ traces the extraordinary journey of Vijay Varma’s rise to fame in the world of cinema.
Vijay has been known over time for playing powerful, sometimes dark characters in several projects including Pink (2016), Gully Boy (2019), Netflix’s series She (2020) and as a womanizer Rizwan in the crime drama Yaara (2020).
After attending the film and television institute of India, Vijay Varma unveiled his talent through theater and short films. This landed Vijay, his first feature film as Jhunku Roy in the 1930’s Chittagong uprising based film, Chittagong (2012). His performance drew the attention of ace writer-director Anurag Kashyap who then went forward and cast him in Monsoon Shootout (2013) as Adi, a rookie cop. While the movie didn’t hit the milestone of his breakthrough as an established actor, Vijay continued to explore more projects but at the same time, Vijay was selective about roles. His strategy bore fruit when he landed his breakout role in Pink as one of the most despised characters in the film.
After his acclaimed role in Pink, Vijay continued to branch out with movies like Raag Desh (2017) and landed his first web series Cheers – Friends. Reunion. Goa (2018). Vijay diversified as an artiste and entered Tollywood with a role of a gangster in MCA Middle Class Abbayi (2017). Vijay received the most attention from critics and audiences for his role Moeen, a street wise car thief and drug dealer, in 2019 super hit drama, Gully Boy (2019). Vijay went ahead and delivered some phenomenal performances in She (2020), Baaghi 3 (2020), Bamfaad (2020), Zoya Akhtar’s Ghost Stories (2020) and in Yaara (2020). Vijay challenged himself to learn Urdu to play a language tutor in his first international project, the BBC drama – A Suitable Boy (2020). It will be interesting to see which challenging roles he takes up next.
