Review : Ameena : A rape victim’s revenge drama!
Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. Most of the cases do not even come to the police due to societal fears. The rate of rapes of minors is also high and most of the girls are from weaker section of the society who are financially fragile. This has been the subject of some of the movies wherein a female protagonist takes revenge. #Ameena is a movie which deals with the subject of ‘#rape’ which takes place with two parallel time frames. The movie is adapted from a play, ‘#YahanAmeenaNiktiHai’ which is inspired by a true incident.
Meena (Rekha Rana) is a young girl who plays a main role in a play where a minor girl is married off to a rich but 65 year old Arab by her parents for money. She is a victim of human trafficking and experiences rape in the marriage and commits suicide. In real life Meena has been a rape victim too when she was under 18 years old. The culprits, Raghu Verma, Rajesh Raghavan and Mahendra Sawant, roam scot-free. But Meena decides to take revenge by killing them. How she goes about it forms the crux of the story.
Aftab Hussain has written the stage play part while the other story is penned by Kishan H Pawar. Despite the story having weightage, the screenplay seems loose. The writers have skilfully woven both the girl’s stories seamlessly but the execution in the direction is amateurish. The production values should have been better but the cinematography is excellent. The action scenes are decently choreographed. The visuals from Africa, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, US are eye pleasing. The music is good while the background score helps the narrative. Rekha Rana has done a decent job in the both parts she portrays. Anant Mahadevan as writer Aftab Hasnain is impressive. Others are okay and amateurish.
Ameena tries to showcase women’s struggles and throws a valid message in the end.
