Binny And Family

Review : Binny And Family: An Unconventional Yet Delightful Debut for Anjini Dhawan!

Not long ago, the debate surrounding nepotism in the film industry took center stage, stirring intense conversations. While star kids might indeed find their initial break with relative ease, it is only true talent that ultimately endures. Enter the latest addition to the scene, #AnjiniDhawan—niece of #VarunDhawan and granddaughter of veteran actor Anil Dhawan—who steps into the limelight with her debut film Binny And Family. The film poignantly addresses the widening chasm between generations, encapsulated by the telling tagline, ‘Har generation kuch kehti hai.’
In the story, Binny (Anjini Dhawan) relocates to London when her parents, Vinay and Radhika (portrayed by Rajesh Kumar and Charu Shankar), migrate from Bihar to the UK. Every year, her grandparents (played masterfully by Pankaj Kapoor and Himani Shivpuri) visit and stay for a couple of months, sharing Binny’s room. A typical teenager, Binny craves personal space and vehemently opposes her grandparents’ impending visit. When her grandmother falls ill in Bihar, she pressures her father to prevent them from traveling to London for treatment. Tragically, her grandmother passes away, leaving Binny to grapple with overwhelming guilt, believing that her selfishness cost her grandmother’s life. The film explores Binny’s emotional journey as she navigates this heart-wrenching loss.
Though the concept of generational conflict has been explored in numerous films, Binny And Family approaches the subject with a refreshing sensitivity. Director Ssanjay Tripathi opts for a simple narrative style, focusing heavily on the emotional nuances of the characters. While the first half, which delves into Binny’s school life, might feel a little sluggish, the second half lifts the pace and substance. The film benefits from good music and commendable cinematography, while the production values are solid. However, the editing could have been tighter to enhance the flow.
Where Binny And Family truly shines is in the performances. The seasoned cast—Pankaj Kapoor, Rajesh Kumar, Himani Shivpuri, and Charu Shankar—delivers in spades, bringing an authenticity to their roles. Yet, it is Anjini Dhawan who leaves an indelible mark. Her debut performance is a revelation, marked by maturity and finesse. In an industry where debutants often rely on romantic pairings, Anjini boldly chooses a script that stands apart, showcasing her as an artist with depth. Her unconventional entry into the world of cinema is undeniably impressive.
