Chhaava

Review : ‘Chhaava’ : A grand, gripping tribute to a forgotten Maratha legend, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj

Chhaava is a historical period drama infused with grandeur, authenticity, and compelling performances, Chhaava emerges as a cinematic spectacle that pays a fitting tribute to the legacy of #ChhatrapatiSambhajiMaharaj. Directed by #LaxmanUtekar, the film transports the audience to an era of valor, sacrifice, and undying patriotism, with #VickyKaushal, #RashmikaMandanna, and #AkshayeKhanna leading the charge in this epic saga.

The film opens with a resounding impact, as #AjayDevgns powerful voice narrates the extraordinary life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj—his unwavering mission to establish Swaraj and the sacrifices he made to protect his people. However, his demise brings a sinister twist. The Mughals, assuming the Maratha kingdom to be leaderless, unleash chaos and destruction upon the land.

But out of the shadows of this turmoil rises Chhaava—Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj (Vicky Kaushal), the fierce warrior who takes charge to defend his empire and uphold his father’s legacy. Standing resolutely by his side is Maharani Yesubai (Rashmika Mandanna), his pillar of strength, along with loyal warriors like Sarsenapati Hambirao Mohite (Ashutosh Rana), Kavi Kalash (Vineet Kumar Singh), and Yesaji Rao Kank (Pradeep Rawat). However, the greatest threat looms in the form of the ruthless Mughal emperor Aurangzeb (Akshaye Khanna), leading to a series of intense Maratha-Mughal confrontations that define the course of history.

“Sher mar gaya lekin uska chhaava abhi bhi jungle mein ghoom raha hai.” – This dialogue encapsulates the essence of Vicky Kaushal’s performance. He embodies the lion-hearted warrior with sheer brilliance, exuding intensity, determination, and raw power in every frame. His portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj is fierce, commanding, and deeply immersive—undoubtedly, a career-defining role. Rashmika Mandanna looks stunning on screen as Maharani Yesubai. She should have worked a little harder on her dialogue delivery, which slightly dampens her impact. However, her presence remains strong and significant throughout. Akshaye Khanna, on the other hand, delivers a menacing and calculated performance as Aurangzeb, seamlessly embodying the notorious Mughal ruler with chilling precision. His expressions, dialogue delivery, and screen presence make him a formidable adversary, adding gravitas to the narrative. The supporting cast, featuring stalwarts like #AshutoshRana, #VineetKumarSingh, #PradeepRawat, #DivyaDutta, and #DianaPenty, contribute significantly, enhancing the film’s emotional depth and historical authenticity.

Laxman Utekar’s meticulous direction ensures that Chhaava stands tall as a visually breathtaking period drama. From the intricately designed costumes to the grand war sequences, every frame echoes historical accuracy and immersive storytelling. The cinematography captures the magnificence of the Maratha empire, transporting viewers to a time of heroism and treachery. While the background score successfully evokes goosebumps, certain song placements feel misplaced, momentarily disrupting the film’s rhythm. However, these minor flaws do little to overshadow the film’s overall impact.

Chhaava is not just a film—it is a stirring tribute to one of history’s greatest warriors, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. With breathtaking visuals, powerful performances, and a gripping narrative, it revives an important yet lesser-known chapter of India’s medieval history. Despite minor imperfections, it remains a must-watch for history enthusiasts and lovers of grand period dramas.
