Dharmarakshak Mahaveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj

Review : Dharmarakshak Mahaveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj – Part 1 : Sincere attempt to honour the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj!

The Maratha Empire’s rich history and its valiant kings, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his son Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, have always inspired awe and patriotism. While numerous films have celebrated the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, recent attention has shifted to his successor, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The Marathi film Dharmarakshak Mahaveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj – Part 1 takes on the ambitious task of showcasing the life and valor of the Maratha king, focusing on his prowess as a warrior and his wisdom as a ruler.

Set against the backdrop of 17th-century Bharatvarsh, the film explores the early life and leadership of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, portraying his battles against the Mughal Empire. It underlines his indomitable spirit and his commitment to protecting the Maratha kingdom. The narrative captures his bravery, intelligence, and compassion but occasionally falters with pacing issues, as some scenes feel either overly stretched or rushed.

Director Tushar Shelar brings Sambhaji Maharaj’s story to life with grandeur, showcasing the warrior king’s leadership qualities, bravery, and emotional depth. The film is visually stunning, with a commendable effort in costume design and set construction that adds authenticity. However, the execution occasionally lacks finesse, affecting the overall impact. The film’s strengths lie in its sincere attempt to handur the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, stunning visuals, and commendable performances. However, its shortcomings include inconsistent pacing and a lack of emotional exploration, particularly in Sambhaji and Yesubai’s personal life.

Thakur Anoop Singh delivers a commanding performance as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, balancing the character’s fierceness as a warrior and his intelligence as a ruler. While his portrayal occasionally leans toward theatricality, the essence of the character’s heroism shines through.
Amruta Khanvilkar, as Yesubai, Sambhaji’s wife, looks beautiful and adds grace and emotional depth despite limited screen time. The film misses an opportunity to delve deeper into their relationship, which could have added an emotional layer to the narrative. The supporting cast, including Pradeep Rawat, Ujjwal Chopra, Kamlesh Sawant, and Vineet Sharma, deliver solid performances, adding gravitas to the historical drama. Anil Gavas stands out as Bahirji Naik, impressing with his multiple disguises and versatility in a short span.

Dharmarakshak Mahaveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj – Part 1 is a heartfelt tribute to one of history’s most courageous rulers. Despite its flaws, the film succeeds in evoking pride and admiration for the Maratha warrior king, making it a worthwhile watch for history enthusiasts and fans of epic dramas.
