Review : The Buckingham Murders: Kareena’s Mesmerizing Detective Turn!
As actors ascend to stardom, many yearn for performance-driven roles that challenge their artistry. It’s no surprise, then, that #KareenaKapoorKhan, a name synonymous with glamour, has ventured into deeper, more intense characters. Often dismissed as just a glamorous icon, Kareena, now in her 40s, is embracing roles that allow her to showcase her dramatic prowess. After her gripping portrayal of a mysterious central character in Jaane Jaan, she takes on the role of a detective in The Buckingham Murders, delivering a powerhouse performance that leaves a lasting impact.
In this intriguing film, Kareena plays Jasmeet Bhamra, or Jass, a sergeant in the British police force. Haunted by the tragic loss of her son at the hands of a criminal, Jass carries an emotional weight that permeates her every action. In a moment of raw grief and fury, she punches the criminal sentenced for her son’s murder, leading to her transfer to the quiet town of Buckingham. There, she is assigned a seemingly straightforward case of a missing boy. However, as the investigation unfolds, layers of mystery are revealed, and what began as a disappearance soon spirals into a complex murder case with a web of suspects.
The narrative is richly textured, weaving in elements like communal tensions during cricket matches, LGBTQ+ issues, extramarital affairs, religious conflicts, and the dark underworld of drug abuse. Despite this rich tapestry, the main plot lacks the gripping twists one expects from a true whodunit thriller. Clocking in under two hours, Hansal Mehta’s direction is straightforward, though one might have hoped for a touch more intricacy. The music and background score are serviceable, while the cinematography leaves much to be desired.
Nevertheless, the heart of the film is undoubtedly Kareena Kapoor Khan. She steps into the shoes of a detective with ease, delivering a nuanced, deeply emotional performance. Unafraid to shed her glamorous image, Kareena embraces the de-glam look with grace, allowing her character’s emotional depth to shine through. It’s a role that she carries effortlessly, commanding the screen with every scene. Notable performances from Ranveer Brar, Ash Tandon, and Prabhleen Sandhu add layers to the film, while the supporting cast provides a solid foundation.
Released in both English and Hinglish, The Buckingham Murders showcases Kareena Kapoor Khan in a never-before-seen light, and her portrayal of a tenacious detective is nothing short of captivating.
