One of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s larger-than-life Worlds was Devdas. The iconic drama, based on Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, is an intense love story featuring Shah Rukh Khan as Dev, Aishwarya Rai as Paro, his childhood love interest and Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi, a courtesan. The drama was a super hit and is still considered one of the classics in Bollywood. Let us revisit some of the iconic scenes from the movie and relive them.
1. Dev and Paro reunited:
Eagerly waiting to meet each Paro, Dev returns home after a decade of staying abroad. They go on to meet her in her room and that is when he knows how mesmerized he is by her beauty. In a scene, he even burns his hand in an interaction. The childhood best friends talk about the differences life offered in the ten years they spent apart in a banter when Paro asks why Dev didn’t reply to her letters.
2. Dev and Chandramukhi’s first encounter:
When his desire to marry Paro gets rejected by his own family, a heartbroken Dev finds himself in a brother where he is introduced to a good-hearted courtesan named Chandramukhi. Their first interaction leads to curiosity as she converses with him through riddling Shayaris.
3. Paro’s Marriage:
Remember the heartbreaking scene where Paro is already in her bridal attire waiting for her to be called in the wedding hall? Dev goes through an emotional rollercoaster as he is seen in a bid to convince Paro not to get married to another man. Paro is enraged at being abandoned by Dev through a letter.
4. Paro and Chandramukhi face-off:
Paro and Chandramukhi finally meet where Paro accuses her for entertaining and drawing Dev into the brother while she later learns of the love that they share for Dev. Interestingly, they bond through the differences. In a society that will not accept this love, Paro invites Chandramukhi to her home for Durga Puja and the iconic ‘Dola Re Dola’ kicks in.
5. Dev’s last promise:
As Dev spirals closer to his own demise, he travels to Paro’s house in order to fulfil his promise of marriage. While still on his deathbed, Paro understands why Dev arrives when he does and can be seen running towards him, only to be stopped by her family as the haveli door closes. Paro is heartbroken witnessing the condition Dev is in while he takes his last breath seeing her rush towards him.
