Short films on ‘Mahatma’ on Gandhi Jayanti on Shorts TV

There have been several films on the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Every film has something new to depict – shades of him as a father, a leader, a discriminated-against barrister. On this Gandhi Jayanti, the world’s first and only 24/7 linear TV channel dedicated to short films, ShortsTV brings you three finest short films, inspired by the life of Mahatma Gandhi.

And Gandhi Goes Missing is a powerful film portraying the non-violent principles of Gandhi that are going missing in today’s India. The story is about a boy who bears the surname Godse, and he is looked down upon by his classmates and friends as everybody believes he has family connections with Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, Nathuram Godse. The story explores the universal emotion of prejudice regarding race, caste, creed, and religion in rural India. The film has won many awards at international film festivals and was the opening film at Times of India’s Kala Ghoda Shamiana Film festival.

To Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is a picturesque slice of life drama. The film is a look at the several losses of the Indian-Pakistan partition in 1947. The partition was not merely a partition of a country and its land, but deep bonds and love. The film traces how Amrit Singh, a young boy, loses his love Imroz to the Indo-Pak partition and blames Gandhi for it. The film features legendary actor Tom Alter in a pivotal role.

Bapu tracks the journey of an apprentice postman who finds out that a man has been writing a letter to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi over a few years. From the mundane, sleep-inducing rut of a post office to the house of an old man who has been sending out letters to the same address for years, the short film skilfully builds a narrative that will leave you feeling fuzzy at the end of it all. The film was nominated for Best non-fiction Short at Filmfare ’16.

You can watch these short films on Tata Sky ShortsTV, ShortsTV Active, and Airtel ShortsTV.
